Factoring Social Media Into the Domain Sale

If you own a portfolio of valuable domains, have you secured any of the corresponding social media real estate?  For brand strategy firm FairWinds: “…the connection between domain names and usernames is clear—they are both critical digital assets that protect and promote a company’s initiatives online.”

Increasingly business owners are considering the availability of Facebook and Twitter handles into their decision-making, when discussing branding strategies.

While it may not be worthwhile to spend the time registering these handles for the majority of your portfolio, consider taking the time to do this for higher-priced domains. If you are able to offer control of these assets as part of your listed domain package, you may be more successful in selling—and selling at a higher price—than would otherwise be the case.

Domain Sales By Category October 2011

As a regular newsletter feature we are again sharing 2011 category-based sales information from Afternic. The graph reflects data from 1/1/11 – 10/24/11.

The categories computers and business each accounted for 11% of domains sold. Recreation dropped to 10%, along with the shopping and society categories.

Family life, health and regional domains are showing gains; each of the three accounted for 6% of domains sold, by category.

Retailers Move to Delay TLD Expansion

According to Bloomberg News:

“A retail-industry group asked the U.S. government to delay plans to expand the Internet’s address system, saying store owners need more time to assess the impact of adding hundreds of Web suffixes such as .bank and .nyc.”

ICANN’s planned TLD expansion is under attack by trade groups angered that the pending change will, in their estimation, offer few benefits while dramatically increasing businesses’ costs as they are forced to defensively register domain names.

According to Mallory Duncan, general counsel of the Washington-based National Retail Federation, the change will raise “a wide range of legal issues and brand identity concerns.”

While it’s not clear if ICANN will, in fact, delay the planned move business advocacy groups are clearly mobilizing to prevent this expansion.

Afternic DLS Members Score with Addition of GoDaddy

Afternic’s Domain Listing Service (DLS) announced a major “win-win” for both domain sellers and buyers at the recent T.R.A.F.F.I.C. conference: DLS-listed domains now appear in the main GoDaddy search results when there is an exact match.

This means that DLS, already the world’s largest domain marketplace, now includes 6 of the world’s top 10 resellers, reaching an audience of 50 million prospective domain buyers monthly. This greatly increases your ability to sell domains with Afternic.

Go Daddy is not integrated as an “Instant Transfer” partner, so you do not need to have your domains at Go Daddy to take advantage of this distribution.
